Where to eat with kids in Cheshire!

Cheshire is one of the most beautifil counties in England, with everything from historic Roman cities such as Chester to rolling green fields in the south of the county and a grand industrial heritage in the North.

Given all this diversity, it offers a great range of options for eating and drinking, from sophisticated restaurants in Chester to a plethora of rural pubs and village cafes. To see it's great range simply look below...

Belgian Restaurants in Cheshire

Moules a Go Go - - Nice modern restaurant specialising in mussels, just like you get in Belgium, in a big pan with a bowl of continental fries and mayonaise on the side. So if you've become addicted to Moules Frites in Oostende or Koksijde, given them a go, and bring back some memories. Very kid friendly, and a good menu for kids, although like many other establishments, even though the main menu changes seasonally, the kids menu is fairly static.

Cafes in Cheshire

Eddisbury Deli - - A great little cafe in Frodsham. All the usual stuff, toasties, paninis, all day breakfasts and more, but all of it cooked to perfection by great people! Great food for kids and adults, although can get busy at prime times.

Cafe Trio - - From the outside Cafe Trio looks like a normal cafe. However, if you take a look at the menu you'll see that in addition to the usual fare such as toasties, all day breakfasts and jacket potatoes it also offers a great range of Thai food. As there are many good eateries in Chester we had not got round to trying the Trio until we received an email from a Jessicas Juice reader (Thanks Andy), tipping us off that the Thai cuisine at the Trio is excellent and that it is operated by a family of Thai origin. This prompted a visit which took us by total surprise and which was well worthwhile.

Booths - You may think, why in a guide to eating out are you listing a supermarket. The fact is the supermarket has a great cafe which both offers good value and good food for all the family. Their official title is the Knutsford Tea Rooms, although this is a bit OTT.

However, the food and drink they serve is of a class above the likes of what you tend to find in most supermarket cafe's. They offer a selection of good quality quick meals including toasties, bakes potatoes, full English breakfasts and more. They also have on most days a short specials board including 2 or 3 main courses and 1 desert of the day. On the family front, they are more than family friendly, and you never have problems finding a quality high chair.

Chinese Takeaways in Cheshire

Chinese Open Kitchen - In our opinion (Wendy being Chinese), this Chinese takeaway offers some of the the best food to takeaway in Runcorn, and probably in the whole region! Although, they are quite a new takeaway and are not in an ideal position for passing trade, it is well worth the effort of the slight detour from the usual takeaways and chip shops in Church Street and wander up to High Street for some excellent Chinese food.

Our whole family loves the great meals they sell, our favourites being, their Crispy Duck (which is every bit as good as many Chinese Restaurants), their Soft Noodles which again are of restautant standard, and their King Po Chicken which shows the competition how a spicy Chinese dish should be done. The starters such as Spring Rolls and Prawn Won Ton are also great, and their Prawn Crackers are also fantastic and don't suffer from the usual fault of being greasy (they are lovely crisp and dry).

K Lee Supper Bar - has been in Church Street in Runcorn Old Town for as long as I can remember! It is both a Chinese Takeaway and a Chippy, which has served the population of Runcorn consistently for many years. Although perhaps not as fancy and adventurous as dedicated Chinese takeaways it is still a regular food trough I visit most weeks. My personal favourite of theirs is their soft noodles which is both tasty and plentiful.

Jasmin House - is another Chinese takeaway, which recently moved under new management. Under the old management, it started well, but seemed to go off the boil after a couple of months of being open. Now it has a new manager, we recently sampled there wares, by just ordered a single portion of King Po Chicken. The meal itself was excellent with succulent chicken in a nice and spicy sauce with veg and cashewnuts. We're sure we'll give them another try soon and will detail our experiences in full once we have more data!

After my previous promise, we did pay a repeat visit a couple of days later, opting for the 1/4 Aromatic Crispy Duck at 6, The Crispy Won Ton at 2.20 and the Special Noodles at 4.20! The food this time was not completely to our liking, although with any new establishment they are probably not into the swing of things yet. Will have to give them another go in a couple of months when they should be upto full speed.

Delis in Cheshire

Monks - Monk's has been one of the few places to buy excellent food in Runcorn for many years with it's small shop in the old Runcorn Market building. Because of the renovations of the centre of Old Town Runcorn, they have recently moved to larger premises in the old Littlemoors bakery across the road. Now with more retail space their offerings are even more tempting and range of foods from around the world even better. Make sure you visit if you're in Runcorn.

Food! - - An Alladin's cave of classy food from around the world. As it's a small shop it's not ideal for pushchairs, but is definitely worth a visit everytime you're in Fridsham. Their sandwiches and salad boxes are fantastic and cracking good value.

Fish and Chip Shops in Cheshire

Les's Fish Bar - is a award winning Fish and Chip shop with a nice little Cafe alongside. We are regular visitors and although it's not a fancy gaff, it does offer some of the best Fish and Chips in Cheshire. Although we have not visited them, they also have a shop in Winsford.

French Restaurants in Cheshire

Francs - - A great French restaurant, slightly off the beaten track. It offers good value set meals and a slightly unusual selection of food for the kids. Well worth a visit although booking ahead is essential most of the time, plus let them know if you need a high chair.

Chez Jules - - A very busy French restaurant, near the Odeon Cinema and Bus Station in Chester. Great food with their 2 course lunch menu at only 6.90 offering a daily changing selection of good food. They do allow kids, although they do not have a specific kids menu.

Hotel Restaurants in Cheshire

Rowton Hall - is a large hotel just south of Chester. We ere recommended to visit it's restaurant by a friend and are so glad we did. We had one of the best meals we've had and in lovely surroundings with exceptional service to boot.

Indian Takeaways in Cheshire

Taj Mahal - - A great Indian takeaway, on the main drag in Frodsham. Their food is top quality and they have won a number of awards for it. For best value select one of their set meals, you get loads for good Indian food for 11 or 12. The staff are really friendly and the kids get proper Chupa Chups lollies!

Italian Restaurants in Cheshire

Sergios - - A great classic Italian restaurant with lovely food for all the family. It's right in the centre of town, near the Cathedral, but as it's down a short lane make sure you don't miss it. The staff are very friendly both with adults and kids in an honest way which unlike some places does not make you feel sick! If you've kids love pasta, get them a starter portion, it's plenty (even for adults)!

Zizzi - - A modern Italian restaurant near the City walls, which is a bit flash!

Dinos - Underground Italian Favourites!

Pastarazzi - - A very up-market Italian eatery, with prices to match! Note for parents of young kids, no baby chairs!

Est Est Est - - A 'chain' Italian restaurant, which in our opinion is better than their branch in the Albert Dock (bit to dark for our liking)! Their pizzas are big and usually good quality, and their kids meals include a DIY pizza option which most kids love although at nearly six quid it ain't that cheap!

Mediteranean Restaurants in Cheshire

Ego - - A nice restaurant near Francs which offers a good range of southern European themed dishes, with a good value lunch menu which main fault is that it does not change often enough! Great for kids, and kids can have any pasta dish or starter as their meal which is very good if you want your kids to eat proper food and not sausages and chips!

Mexican Restaurants in Cheshire

Fiesta Havana - - Although Jessica's Juice specialising in places to eat for the whole family, we have recently visited Fiesta Havana in Chester and had a great, good value lunchtime meal! The sight problem is, that on ther Fiesta Havana website it states that their restaurants are over 18s only. As we did not have the kids with us this time, we're not sure whether this rule applies to all day or just evenings, so be warned.

That said the food was great...

Dos Americas - - A small Mexican restaurant on the Rows in Chester which to our dismay does not open at lunchtimes during the week (WHY WE ASK)! We've been there many times and had great meals, but it's a shame that you just can't pop in when you're in Chester shopping during the week! Nonetheless it offers a great Beat The Clock menu and Lunchtime menu at weekends which enable you to sample their specialties at a great price!

El Rio - is a lovely little Mexican restaurant just off the main shopping street in Macclesfield. So off the main street if was almost a miracle that we found it and only good look that Wendy looked down a narrow cobbled street just at the right moment. This luck however, was well worth it and provided us with a great lunchtime meal.

Pubs in Cheshire

The Travellers Rest (The Tup) - Although it is many a moon since we visited the Tup, it is aways a pleasure to sit outside on a sunny summer's day with a pint in your hand! I have added them to Jessica's Juice not from any specific review but from many happy times there in the past. I must make an effort to pay a visit one lunchtime and partake of their latest food offerings. Will report back once I have done so!

Walton Arms - is another watering hole that I have not visited in a good while, although it is one I have been to many times! From my past times I always enjoyed it's ales and foods and must revisit soon in order to try them again!

Pub Restaurants in Cheshire

Golden Pheasant - A great pub and hotel offering both bar and restaurant menus and best of all a great range of JW Lees beers. The pub is very family friendly and offers and good kids menu and high chairs for the little ones. We would describe most of the food as good pub standard although they do offer a lot of more adventuous meals on their specials board including Venison Pie and Mussels in Chilli Sauce. On the ale front, if you're not driving try to the Moonraker which at 7.5% packs a great kick as well as a lovely rounded taste.

The Dog Inn - A great country pub in the back lanes of Cheshire just south of Knutsford. From Knutsford go south on the A50, then take a left at the Barclays offices at Radbroke Hall (The Whipping Stocks Pub), the it's about 1.5 miles on the left. Be careful as there is a sharp turn left into the pub car park. The journey is well worth the trouble as the food is always great and if you have enough space in your stomach for a pudding, their desert selection is breathtaking.

Duttons - A JW Lees food pub down a back alley in Chester!

Swedish Restaurants in Cheshire

Aquavit - - One of the best restaurants in Chester, and with a 5.95 great value 3 course lunch menu, it's always a favourite when you want cracking food at a great price. This bargain lunch menu is slightly unusual as there is only 1 option every day, but it's always fantastic both in quality and value terms!
